And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power …
to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ …
that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
Tammany Oaks is a group of people on God’s mission. The Bible tells the story of God's mission. In the Bible, both Old and New Testament, we read of a God whose mission was to form a distinct kind of people, to live different kind of lives from those around them but at the same time to live this life for the people around them.
As such, Tammany Oaks seeks to be a counter-cultural people who live out a life informed by God’s story for the sake of the world. Consequently, words commonly used in the larger culture take on a different meaning for us.
For example, church, for us, is not a place where certain religious things happen; rather church refes to a group of people who take seriously that they have been called by God to participate in His mission.
Alternatively, take the word Christian. Instead of viewing a Christian as someone with a particular religious belief system, we use the word “Christian” more simply to refer to a person who has made a personal commitment to the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus—to follow the ways of Jesus. This is the only kind of Christian we want to be.
When one becomes a Christian, in this sense, one joins the God who created the universe. Moreover, one enters into the life of God, where one can become “rooted and established” in God’s love—where one can find the power to plunge into the deepness of God’s love shown in the life of Jesus. The outcome of this relationship is to experience God fully or, as we sometimes say, to live God’s life.
